One of the best thing about the ceramics world is the sense of community and sharing. While I'm trying to conquer the world through ceramics here at Warwick, I may need you, and you may need me. This is our place to share, critique, comment, harass, complain, ask, and praise your high school ceramics teacher. We can all help each other, and above all, give each other a little glimpse into the creations of your art world.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comBlogger20125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1709209450876018406.post-4436947638932238082010-01-05T00:15:00.004-05:002010-01-05T00:23:48.971-05:00ATTN:This post is an official call out to Nate Nixdorf to post photos of current work. We all know that you have new work because you had a sale. And I know you're all about photographing work. I have been posting circles around you even with a full course load and playing field hockey 20 hours a week! This is in fact your own blog, so use it! I did a total of six firings, but only got pieces out of 5 of them. Overall, I think it's more work than it's worth. Not that pit firings are bad techniques, I've seen a lot of good things in my research, I just didn't have access to the right equipment to make it work how I wanted it to. I was doing them at my grandparents' house in Texas where it was usually around 104-106 degrees from 11 am to about 6pm. Needless to say, shoveling wood into a hot pit was the last thing I wanted to do- even in the evening when it was "cool". <div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>I found that I was at a loss for what to make. I felt like I was working in a vacuum, but it didn't matter because everything I made blew up because I was firing them green. The only things that made it were the bisque pieces i brought from home. The greenware made some great colors and gave the best surface results, but after several attempts, I gave up on it. I don't really like any of the shapes I have except for the two jars because I had to just grab any bisque I had laying around and pack it up.</div><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span> I tried several different things to get some flashes on the pieces including sodium bicarbonate, copper wire, miracle grow, salt, sugar, rust, and copper spray-paint. Copper spray-paint's main ingredient is copper carbonate- so it obviously flashes well, and the salt does some cool stuff too. The sodium bicarbonate clumped up on the pot and became solid, so when you chip it off it takes part of the pot with it. I have no idea how i got some green in one of the bowls, or how i got the red inside one of the cups... </div><div>Let me know what you think!</div>ethan martinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14707668195012383493noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1709209450876018406.post-79065370059484623222009-06-03T22:35:00.004-04:002009-06-03T22:59:04.030-04:00in the woods<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJsz7j02fmZkfq5wTcK-lHZqR7NPPWI9Woj-lsc20HxTfkTZHZ-8nfc12QmW9ElMbFQVdzFLpSzp_towT98ZrdkWXtzdqJnYOUBasKGYxn-vkX2LopDKPLyeChy5MZ_qosYb0dB_C-d4o/s1600-h/DSC_0418.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 212px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJsz7j02fmZkfq5wTcK-lHZqR7NPPWI9Woj-lsc20HxTfkTZHZ-8nfc12QmW9ElMbFQVdzFLpSzp_towT98ZrdkWXtzdqJnYOUBasKGYxn-vkX2LopDKPLyeChy5MZ_qosYb0dB_C-d4o/s320/DSC_0418.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5343301165299711122" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv45ezE5c9kpdQUV3SqPy5VZT33w3hPb4AACy1DExGyyxcuziqvYHyY82n1hWzttWdpqgB1DbNJPDgpeZfpF0zoC8iwkBMqIFmVTwLIw5nPJebyOFZBFCEc_T16Z5bAyrWTLcDqnTl9uo/s1600-h/DSC_0401.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv45ezE5c9kpdQUV3SqPy5VZT33w3hPb4AACy1DExGyyxcuziqvYHyY82n1hWzttWdpqgB1DbNJPDgpeZfpF0zoC8iwkBMqIFmVTwLIw5nPJebyOFZBFCEc_T16Z5bAyrWTLcDqnTl9uo/s320/DSC_0401.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5343301160059816338" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLGHflhBl3Uz9e0aYT5bsWseSVxGTAyWxLaM5zscWg3JN_B7cYJDp6yywihWK_cks0eMTaLuwDZRqudVLbNM9TDUmfx37A_gMKYrgZmEI80GgywENcVMDUVYBkQozIkSNOR7h9vlrnSgs/s1600-h/DSC_0371.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLGHflhBl3Uz9e0aYT5bsWseSVxGTAyWxLaM5zscWg3JN_B7cYJDp6yywihWK_cks0eMTaLuwDZRqudVLbNM9TDUmfx37A_gMKYrgZmEI80GgywENcVMDUVYBkQozIkSNOR7h9vlrnSgs/s320/DSC_0371.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5343301154419830834" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcXaW7ECgCP86P0VAkGME6Vi-H9dyELEGMRkNF-RWLGGVU0FBoico6GeT-ndgjltFjz7o8nFjVoQfKmsBevL-q72p88ACrqQsi2S_AKrtqmdA_WzfuW5IcGWeuZwEiGXbOyjCjrzwb7Go/s1600-h/DSC_0421.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcXaW7ECgCP86P0VAkGME6Vi-H9dyELEGMRkNF-RWLGGVU0FBoico6GeT-ndgjltFjz7o8nFjVoQfKmsBevL-q72p88ACrqQsi2S_AKrtqmdA_WzfuW5IcGWeuZwEiGXbOyjCjrzwb7Go/s320/DSC_0421.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5343301150204625026" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJxZL9UeojM3AEc1l9V9ZOwhDcp-hP0p_cluHvzne0yxQBgGSj63_ew-tC96D0x_AEWxomxw0BfAP758ds3zsFjYdO6H7NNCza6XuH6l-IneRBLBUJrLL86MxHcjI0-ZtpdkorAE1UZhc/s1600-h/DSC_0337.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJxZL9UeojM3AEc1l9V9ZOwhDcp-hP0p_cluHvzne0yxQBgGSj63_ew-tC96D0x_AEWxomxw0BfAP758ds3zsFjYdO6H7NNCza6XuH6l-IneRBLBUJrLL86MxHcjI0-ZtpdkorAE1UZhc/s320/DSC_0337.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5343301149097977730" border="0" /></a><br /><br />i felt that my recent thoughts on form were based on natural shapes, but the space that they occupied was equally, if not more important. they needed an environment that they would seem comfortable in, so i took some pictures in the woods at gretna and found that the shapes sat in<br /><br />the natural surroundings... well... quite naturally. i wanted to show the intimacy between the form and the surfaces it came in contact with as well as the association between the collective pieces. And you were so excited about it last year... Nevertheless, I promised I'd post something when I had new things. So, here are some things that I've done this semester: some finished, some in progress.<br /><br />About KSU ceramics... Ceramics 1 is entirely hand building, and the only method of glaze firing that we're supposed to do is raku. Unless you make things that can't withstand the quick heat shock or that are too big to fit inside the kiln... opps. We mix our own red earthenware clay in ancient soldner mixers that are always broken, and load our own bisques. Surface decoration is encouraged with studio slips, not surprising considering the two lead professors' works. The studio is old school... kick wheels (with motors fortunately) and slow firing gas kilns. Students are taught to throw starting in Ceramics 2, though I already have a pretty good foundation is that area.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs8cy1mPwQZ6JnHh-uTUxxtUydUNsfQpM9bqCbOIt9CMKV6dfC1GsyM5LzZ-CS9OgVkbsjcOiemZoYnk7ObSL6mLgnb8Ji0KvRlJjECTzQh-eicmD4rfrZgb9ooYC6n_P0IIkSEhEzqqo3/s1600-h/Ceramics+Lab+004.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs8cy1mPwQZ6JnHh-uTUxxtUydUNsfQpM9bqCbOIt9CMKV6dfC1GsyM5LzZ-CS9OgVkbsjcOiemZoYnk7ObSL6mLgnb8Ji0KvRlJjECTzQh-eicmD4rfrZgb9ooYC6n_P0IIkSEhEzqqo3/s320/Ceramics+Lab+004.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5326890702313833762" border="0" /></a>Entirely coil built... unfortunately this cracked pretty severly along a connection, but is still in tact. Textured using a ribbon tool and smoothed out the edges with my favorite blue rubber rib (not a mud tool rib - too firm) when the clay was a firm leatherhard. Black lustre glaze was added into the texture and wiped away from the surface and clear glaze was applied over top. Lightly reduced.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZZy-oHzZZhSSxAKy4dw-Q557qKfGAjIRMKxxR9s5r3rXBjww7MRIHMdfUqG982-cJu6o1bbkbIrb69q6JtAxmWQETo6weOSmyKZRkd5JjRZyLT3G7nDcUUrjhoJtOACmUc-xLD-Xoz9Cd/s1600-h/everything+027.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZZy-oHzZZhSSxAKy4dw-Q557qKfGAjIRMKxxR9s5r3rXBjww7MRIHMdfUqG982-cJu6o1bbkbIrb69q6JtAxmWQETo6weOSmyKZRkd5JjRZyLT3G7nDcUUrjhoJtOACmUc-xLD-Xoz9Cd/s320/everything+027.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5326892375697264242" border="0" /></a>I obviously enjoy making dishes with large exteriors. (It started with my flower frogs last year I think.) Coil built center dish... slab built sides and top. Layered slip decoration... it's tough to see in this picture. Green slip over white slip scraped away with a loop tool. Eva taught me a great way to fix cracks with this piece that was taught to her by Jun Kaneko. (no joke... Jun was her professor at one time) The crack was filled, and no cracks were present when it was unloaded from the bisque. (And I was super happy about that)<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvEibXCax25WY3fZ_cTuRNm-6UcRG-4oHZggXe7Kg_0lF4_7SJluPcLZZ_IdxNSMd4nQ5Alll9MSw3eWpzkKqt3haBtsx47znTfmsEl5Tw2KsPuFwc40-7xTRgbeNi_IPGdQq-s-i099NT/s1600-h/everything+044.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvEibXCax25WY3fZ_cTuRNm-6UcRG-4oHZggXe7Kg_0lF4_7SJluPcLZZ_IdxNSMd4nQ5Alll9MSw3eWpzkKqt3haBtsx47znTfmsEl5Tw2KsPuFwc40-7xTRgbeNi_IPGdQq-s-i099NT/s320/everything+044.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5326892376734239666" border="0" /></a>This is a very large parsnip that I modeled after a regular size parsnip (as seen on the table) for our natural object project. Texture stretches the entire length of the piece (this picture was taken in progress), and surprisingly this didn't shrink an obsurd amount through the first firing. Unfortunately a large section cracked and fell off from the opposite side, but it should be an easy fix. This is about 28 inches tall... a good 6 inches bigger than the max height for the raku kiln. It may or may not get wood fired within the next 2 weeks. (depending on available space in the kiln) Entirely coil built and hell to make. I'm so messy when it comes to carving. (And yes, that is the tiny, tiny banding wheel I use while building all of my projects.)<br /><br />That's all for now!!!!!!!!!!!! Love from Kent, Ohio.kwilldershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13159001463589813425noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1709209450876018406.post-85380529235565849912008-10-21T19:44:00.008-04:002008-10-21T19:53:19.793-04:00Ok, now my stuff...<div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibZekAWl2XRxOjGz09Yxm0mzprXQWdx0_aGxfzZ1FMQhZikpLyT0Mcm09YyvpuyyKyWuBf-6qX2AGVV0R0T2TuWOfbFuXzJoL17PREyJw7qhsxJHChg_mJJo1j-h5a9ypTNo129VK-j2mG/s1600-h/DSC_0153.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 164px; height: 245px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibZekAWl2XRxOjGz09Yxm0mzprXQWdx0_aGxfzZ1FMQhZikpLyT0Mcm09YyvpuyyKyWuBf-6qX2AGVV0R0T2TuWOfbFuXzJoL17PREyJw7qhsxJHChg_mJJo1j-h5a9ypTNo129VK-j2mG/s320/DSC_0153.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259758878838787650" border="0" /> </a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJzCxDNWILSJetQyrwQZUkTSfHYRiLUMVxzIitiYDgeeqaZUlsRy07s7y8cuf4u803Xm-d-mUlfX7y5VeoJgma-XgP5i6LuksQCNcyWUPB6qKzC6js8XJmyxIumUEjrQEmmDdtP8RCs92-/s1600-h/DSC_0184.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 165px; height: 247px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJzCxDNWILSJetQyrwQZUkTSfHYRiLUMVxzIitiYDgeeqaZUlsRy07s7y8cuf4u803Xm-d-mUlfX7y5VeoJgma-XgP5i6LuksQCNcyWUPB6qKzC6js8XJmyxIumUEjrQEmmDdtP8RCs92-/s320/DSC_0184.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259759348292698018" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCjcgt2lCwhOwXb64Jxyy94cnDh6KTrM3yYoIWjXCsCaN6PBqrmZbQukyjyadujJnEljncsWAluJOZufmaXu8R82XeR33dPKBu6GKf_r3iLtdCl32vB9yPERBHtJWj-UXgw8C0TI95CU2_/s1600-h/DSC_0123.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 205px; height: 123px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCjcgt2lCwhOwXb64Jxyy94cnDh6KTrM3yYoIWjXCsCaN6PBqrmZbQukyjyadujJnEljncsWAluJOZufmaXu8R82XeR33dPKBu6GKf_r3iLtdCl32vB9yPERBHtJWj-UXgw8C0TI95CU2_/s320/DSC_0123.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259758430629332898" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZMDX_o24CqulD0ZuTFPDSvxURT6SR77e9ICrl1fswdP0-dc4QodA_CMOHGRzcC7RXP3201y3avr573qZCvF8QOgk5P7GDcVo7LWDbc1R-0GFUY5FkIY8g80tOvwc6n-iyKTQRNVtLzxIp/s1600-h/DSC_0112.JPG"> <img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZMDX_o24CqulD0ZuTFPDSvxURT6SR77e9ICrl1fswdP0-dc4QodA_CMOHGRzcC7RXP3201y3avr573qZCvF8QOgk5P7GDcVo7LWDbc1R-0GFUY5FkIY8g80tOvwc6n-iyKTQRNVtLzxIp/s200/DSC_0112.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259758135385467682" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH3aFilPu7UVYsTjGkpfz-WD57OIpuhVse7IuvEAmY-8mbXFhZiMnPjNeMS3eOXzZBjcFjP8vjVGUxqei9CSlwP3ecuAt4ZeEhV6nU-i2lQ6W6wC1N-CH6ifMPMvg2EyXScPknJW0gVssC/s1600-h/DSC_0135.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 249px; height: 154px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH3aFilPu7UVYsTjGkpfz-WD57OIpuhVse7IuvEAmY-8mbXFhZiMnPjNeMS3eOXzZBjcFjP8vjVGUxqei9CSlwP3ecuAt4ZeEhV6nU-i2lQ6W6wC1N-CH6ifMPMvg2EyXScPknJW0gVssC/s320/DSC_0135.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259758757104954722" border="0" /></a></div>Not everyone has seen my work from this summer, so here are some of the highlights. I have three ceramic pieces in an art exchange show between three colleges in the Harrisonburg, VA area. The show is called "Three" and is between Bridgewater College, Eastern Mennonite University, and my school, James Madison University. There are a few students with work in the show from each of the three schools. </div><div><br /></div><div>One is a non-functional (dysfunctional?) combination between a cup and a teapot, titled "Both Ends Up." The other thrown piece is combinations of wheel-thrown vase forms attached end-to-end and glazed together in groups of three. The wall-hanging is based upon an idea I had in a sculpture class, thinking of the idea of how things define a landscape, the way humans mark nature...and thus we have the tree that branches into telephone poles. Sure enough, the wind blew my friend's painting over onto it and the handle shattered off. I guess it's not that big of a deal but I would really like to try and glue it back together, but i can't find anything that works. I tried an all purpose crazy glue and it got some of the handle together, but it won't attach to the body of the teapot. Any suggestions? oh and the lid is fine though i just didn't put it on.ethan martinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14707668195012383493noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1709209450876018406.post-43191431011169109702008-05-26T22:10:00.003-04:002008-05-26T22:13:03.578-04:00Summer is coming....So summer is coming, (or is already here for a few of you). I think one of the ways to make this blog work is to make and share new things. We see what each other makes in class, so it isn't that big of a deal to have it online. We'll need some projects to do over the summer so we can share individual solutions to some common themes. I don't want to be the one that initiates the projects.... I do that all year long. I'd like to hear from you. Any ideas?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1709209450876018406.post-45351004687235318742008-05-08T20:02:00.002-04:002008-05-08T20:04:28.704-04:00the call out...I'm officially calling out Christine for some picts. Each artist was asked to create a work using a wall mounted plexi-glass cube, 4"L x 4"W x 4"H. What they chose to do with the cube was up to them. Most created objects that fit comfortably within the confines of the box. Some chose to break out of these confines. You have hopeful expectations and an anxious excitement to see what the kiln fairy has brought you this fine day. Many times you open the kiln to find exactly what you've always wanted, it's the best present ever! And sometimes you get socks. You pick them up hoping for a hundred dollar bill hidden below, but low and behold, you've got a pair of socks.<br />Tonight was supposed to give the Christmas presents I've always wanted. Three firings, 10 pots, and my three metal raku cans all lined up ready to give me gifts. Argyle socks, dress socks, sport socks, and the socks I'm sure I'll never be able to match once they go in the dryer for the first time.<br />It's just the way things go. Even those of us who feel like we have somewhat of a grasp on how to do all this often fall flat on our face. We just normally don't post it on the internet.<br />The reason for this post isn't to brag that I got some fabulous new socks. I just wanted to try and find some humor in what has been a night of over firings, thin glazes, over and under reductions, and just downright ugly pots. Hooray for clay.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1709209450876018406.post-87823477206023732722008-04-04T17:43:00.002-04:002008-04-04T17:49:59.724-04:00On posting.I'm hoping that your screen looks like mine, because if it doesn't, and you can't post images, The NCAN is going to have to move....<br />In the top right of the screen there should be some options. Not here... not me. I have/foresee a problem that will happen in the near future. I'm going to lose my mind very soon, and will quickly lose touch with many of you. While many of you are creating wonderous things in college, and will hopefully continue beyond, we don't have a forum for sharing. I want to know what you're making, what you're interested in, and what questions you might have. The best thing about the ceramic world is the sense of community and sharing. While I'm trying to conquer the world through the ceramics room here at Warwick, I may need you, and you may need me. This is our place to share, critique, comment, harass, complain, ask, and praise your high school ceramics teacher. We can all help each other, and above all, give me a little glimpse into the creations of your art world. I hope this works.....Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
